Write an annotated bibliography using 3 sources on a topic of interest to you and that is related to a topic in this course.
WHAT IS AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY?
An annotated bibliography is an organized list of sources or citations to books, journal articles, or other documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) paragraph that describes and evaluates the information in the annotation. For our project, we will be using journal articles. A library research day will be arranged to introduce you to the research process and journal articles.
What is the purpose of an annotated bibliography?
Depending on the assignment the annotated bibliography may serve a number of purposes such as:
1. a review of the literature on a particular subject
2. illustrate the quality of research that you have done on a topic
3. provide examples of the types of articles
4. describe other items on a topic that may be of interest to the reader
5. explore the subject for further research
Guidelines for Writing the Annotated Bibliography
The following are the steps you should follow in preparing the bibliography.
1. To begin your project, first, locate and record citations to journal articles that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.
2. Cite the journal article using APA style.
3. Following the citation, write a summary or annotation of the book, article or document you have chosen, in your own words. In your summary, be sure to include information such as the subjects of the study, the procedures used and the conclusions of the author.
4. Following the summary, please provide a one paragraph personal reaction to the article. Did you find the article interesting? How does it relate to psychology?
Papers are due in class on Wednesday November 15th . Be prepared to exchange your paper with another student in class for in class comment and review. Once you have received feedback from your student partner, you will have approximately one week to make your revisions and produce the final bibliography. Papers are to be turned in to me on Monday, November 27th. Papers that are turned in late will be subject to a 10 point per day penalty up to 5 days. Papers will not be accepted after this time.
Style Guidelines
Please be sure that your papers are;
Typed, double spaced
Have 1 inch margins all around (top, bottom and both sides)
Use 12 point Times New Roman or Ariel font
Remember to spell check your paper
Remember to proof-read your paper
Title,
author and publication information at the top of first page, centered
Be sure
to put your name in top corner with the class name and section under it
Final
papers should be 3-5 pages in length
Each
bibliography is worth 30 points for a total of 90 points.
Spelling and grammar are worth an additional 10 points.
SAMPLE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ENTRY FOR A JOURNAL ARTICLE
The following example uses the APA format for the journal citation:
Herz, R.S. (1997) Emotion experienced during encoding enhances odor retrieval cue
effectiveness. American Journal of Psychology, v. 110,n. 4, p. 489.
This article outlines two experiments involving the interconnections of odor, emotions, and memory. Both experiments tested the theory that odor is a more effective recovery cue if it is encoded in an emotionally charged state (anxious) than in an emotionally neutral state. The results of the experiments demonstrate that increased emotion experienced during encoding with an odor can enhance the effectiveness of odor as a retrieval cue. These experiments also support the theory that emotional potency is a key variable in the forming of odor-associated memory. The beginning of the article suggested that such a finding could be explained by the interaction of the olfactory center, the amygdala, and the hippocampus.
Chapter two in our text deals primarily with the functions and interactions of the specific areas of the brain. According to the text, one of the functions of the amygdala is the activation of fear and rage. The hippocampus is also involved with the function of emotion, but in a more regulatory manner. This is also the center of the brain that is involved in forming new memories. Chapter three in our text deals with sensory perception. Perception is the process of interpreting outside stimulus through one of the sense organs. In this case it would be through the olfactory epithelium, which is closely connected to the amygdala and the hippocampus.
The experiments in the article used anxiety as the emotional stimulant for word recall, and I wonder if a more intense emotion or mood would have created different results? I would be curious to see if anger would completely override the influence of an odor, or would the more potent mood intensify the effect odor has on memory recall? I also wonder if positive emotions (love or joy) have similar, or maybe greater, impact on memory recall when associated with an odor.
I also wonder if sex and age have an influence on the emotional recall process associated with odor. In my experience of odor and memory recall, certain odors prompt me to recall intensely, pleasant memories. I have very few memories of unpleasant experiences, which I associate with odors. Most of the memories I consciously associate with odor and positive emotions are from my childhood. Is this a function of the child's developing mind or is it because females are more inclined to identify with pleasant emotions? I think that more research needs to be done in this area.
The following is an example of a citation using APA format for online journal sources
